I have unlimited bandwidth with him and only pay libsyn to have my podcasts hosted there. Since I'm getting rfr.com hosted for free, I really don't feel comfortable asking him to install Word Press even though it takes 5 minutes to do. I asked him about it before one other time and he said he was busy, but maybe soon. I really don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but using word press would really be a good way for my listeners to interact with me instead of having things all willy nilly all over the place. But, free is good and since I'm not making any money off the show except for 1 random sponsorship and random donations from listeners, I really don't want to pay for hosting, even if it' some cheap hosting that's $7 a month, but I might have to bite the bullet and either ask the guy currently hosting to install word press or pony up the money and have hosting somewhere else.
i also thought about redirecting the URL to blogger but that kind of sucks.

Rubyfruit Radio episode 112

Rubyfruit Radio episode 112 featured Alice Smith, Adrienne Pierce, Katie Davis, Lara Ewen and the Unstrung Orchestra, Divine MAGgees, Beth Thornley and The Swear.

Check it out at rubyfruitradio.com

Where have I been lately?

Have you wondered what's been going on and why it seems that there are shows on a regular basis and then there won't be a show for almost 2 weeks?
I have the one word answer. Sciatica.
What's sciatica? It's the biggest nerve in the body and it's being pinched. This began on 11/1 at work. It was a majorly crappy day. My paycheck got screwed up, everything that was going wrong did and the stress caused my muscles to spasm and put me in pain that I can't even describe.
I ended up in the E.R. that night. The pain was an 11 on a scale of 1-10 and I had heard that morphine was a magic drug and would make the pain stop. After 8 shots of morphine, I was still in pain (8 on the scale) which was better than 10, but still hurt like hell.

The pain is centered around a couple of places. It feels like someone is stabbing me in the butt and also the back of the leg. I've also had numbness and a burning sensation in my foot. Sounds fun huh. Drugs don't help. I have a prescription for percocet and it does nothing. Because it's a nerve thing, drugs just aren't going to help at all.

I was in bed for 3 days. It was agony to do things like get up out of bed, walk (even to the bathroom), it was agony to sit on the toilet. It was complete and utter torture. And I wanted to die. I had made some shows in advance before this happened so you might not have noticed a lack of new episodes. But then my backlog of extra shows ran out and then it became really difficult.

During this time, I was offered a new job, so I quit my other job. I took the month of November to focus on getting better before I started my new job on 12/4. By then, I was a lot better, but by the time I got home at the end of the day, to do anything more than lay down was torture. I got better. Then Christmas came and I stopped doing the 2 things I needed to do which was drink lots of water and do stretching excercies a couple of times a day. Coupled with people being in my house for 5 days, my back relapsed.

I've done shows sporadically. They have typically been done on the weekends when I can do them before the pain gets to be too much. Show 101 took me 3 hours to do instead of 30 minutes. I would do something and then have to go lay down for 10-15 minutes and then go back and repeat the process.

I'm going to a chiropractor and a massage therapist and things are getting better. I haven't had any numbness or burning in my foot which is a nice change. Overall, things are getting better. I hope that this means my shows can go back to being somewhat regular and when I feel good, I think I'm going to crank out several shows to have in case things get bad again.

So that's where I've been. I haven't died. I haven't pod faded. I've just been going through an extremely rough time.

There you have it.
Hooray and Terra Naomi rocks

My back is much better now, but not 100%. Though now I can put on my socks by myself so it's progress!
I start a new job on Monday. I interviewed in October. They sure took their sweet time!

In other news, I am completely stuck on Terra Naomi, in particular her songs "Up Here", "I'm Happy" and "The Vicodin Song". Her voice is amazing. Her lyrics are amazing. I am completely mesmerized by her. And guess what, a listener told me about her.One of the best recommendations ever. I've played Up Here and I'm Happy on the show before.I would do an entire show of her stuff if I thought she would go for it. Perhaps I should see if I can do an interview with her. Words fail me. I turn these songs up so loud when they come on. Her whole album "8 track" is great, but something about these 3 songs.
I also checked out some videos, both live performances fans did and some videos she made. 2 thumbs up! Seriously. Listen to her. Now.

Rubyfruit Radio Episode 92

Episode 92 featured Terra Naomi, Ane Brun, Karen Pernick, Krista Detor, Jana Pochop, Amy Fairchild and Des Ark.

Check it out at rubyfruitradio.com

Rubyfruit Radio Episode 91

Episode 91 was a 1 year anniversary episode. I had planned to do a special show for the anniversary, but that plan got messed up because on the 1st, a case of sciatica set in. After a trip to the ER, a week of being at home and many, many drugs, I'm only about 50% better. I can't sit and if I stand for more than 15 minutes, it starts to hurt like hell. If you don't know what sciatica is, basically, the sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body that runs from your back all the way down your leg. Somehow my pelvis got out of line and now my nerve is getting squished. Not good. I could podcast from the laptop, but I don't think I'm that desperate yet. The last time I did that, it was painfully slow. We'll see. I'm going to the chiropractor tomorrow and hopefully he can get me back in line. type='text'>Conventions and what not.

I have 2 major events in September. The first is the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Convention in Miami.
I was asked by Steve Freiss of the Strip Podcast and also a well known freelance write who writes for such publications as USA Today, Wired and Newsweek to be on a panel called Stick It In Your Ear, how podcasting is changing queer radio.
I'm going to be on the panel with him, Madge Weinstein (aka Richard Bluestein) and some guys from Sirius, Logo and Podcastingnews.com. It should be interesting. I'm a little intimidated. I wonder what Richard is really like. Madge's persona is bigger than life, but I wonder if Richard is the same way.

The second is the Portable Media Expo. There are going to be the usual booths hawking products there, but the most important for me is to network. Big podcasters like Dawn and Drew, Adam Curry etc are going to be there. Yes, again with the intimidation. It will be a good thing though.

Also, I've been asking my listeners to help me out with my trips. I make just enough money to get by with my job and make nothng podcasting and as much as I hate "begging" for money, I needed help and who better to ask than my listeners. I'm overwhelmed with how generous the people who have donated have been. There haven't been that many people who have donated, but the ones that have been very generous. A couple of them have been ridiculously generous. I have the best listeners. They could not be more supportive. Is that a lesbian thing or a female thing where we have to "stick together"?
I did have one boy donate. That was sweet. :)
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/19468311-115538606104506688?l=rubyfruitradio.blogspot.com' I've been kicking it around in my head for a while. I could never get anyone to commit to be a co-host so I sort of came up with "The Heather and Whoever Show". The whoever would be whoever I could get on the phone or to come over to my house. It could be my mom, it could be my girlfriend, it could be my dog, I just don't know.

I don't get into my beliefs too much on Rubyfruit. I may mention something about how the current adminsitration sucks but by and large, I don't talk about anything not related to the music. That's the way I want it. But I also have a lot of stuff rolling around in my brain. Might as well take it to the people. I would talk about queer topics, pop culture or whatever.

I'm also trying to figure out how to get people more involved. I know people are listening because I see the stats, but I like feedback. It helps me know that everyone is happy. I guess everyone is happy because the numbers are up and no one is complaining. I want to have some giveaways. People like free stuff right? We'll see.
I'd also like for people to visit the forum. Maybe I will just start randomly posting there and see if anyone else shows up.

I have lots of random Rubyfruit related things in my brain. Now that I have a job where I actually have to work, I don't have time to do Rubyfruit stuff. That and the bastards block things I need to have access to, like gmail, myspace, podshow among many others. I couldn't even go to a gardening forum to look to see when I need to cut my hydrangeas back because it was filtered as chat. Yet, I can get into places like yahoo mail, livejournal, blogger and even my own forum, but not the things I need to access to do all the show related stuff. What I think a lot of people don't understand is that making the show is the easy part. The hard part is all the prep getting permission to play music, finding the music etc and the post show details like blogging about the show and letting people know who was on to try and spread the word about Rubyfruit.

So many things...so little time.

Nelly Furtado

I first heard Nelly Furtado in 2000. She was on Much Music which is the Canadian version of MTV. She had no exposure here at all when I first saw her on TV. I really liked her and bought her debut CD. She played at Lilith and seemed to be growing in popularity. Then she fell off radar for a while. I hadn't heard much about her since 2002 so imagine my surprise when she was on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday and she showed up looking like the spawn of Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and the Pussycat Dolls. ARGH! That's not even the worst part. The worst part was that the songs she sang were TERRIBLE. Seriously awful. It was disappointing. I know that she has always said that hip hop was always a big influence on her, but I miss the cute, guitar playing Nelly Furtado that didn't look like a $2 hooker. Besides that, I'm all for hip hop, but damn, it at least has to be be good hip hop. I don't know WTF happened with her.

Corporate Radio Really Does Suck

I just took a roadtrip to Chicago to interview for some jobs. It's a 12 hour trip one way. I had no ipod with me because the ipod has been having issues. I tried to burn some mix CDs but after about 8, my laptop decided to stop burning them. We've been selling our CD collection on half.com because we're downsizing so the CDs I had were kind of limited. The mix CDs I made had lots of Rubyfruit artists on them. Lots of Adrienne Pierce, Laura Clapp, Gerty!, Nadine Zahr and a bunch of other people. When I went through bigger cities like Nashville, Lousiville, Indianapolis and while I was in Chicago, I scanned through the stations. They were all pretty much the same. The Urban stations were playing the exact same thing as all the other urban stations, the pop stations were playing the same thing as everyone else, the country stations were playing the same thing and it got really old, really fast. It was the same artists, the same songs. It was sucky. The only station I liked was the Alternative station in Chicago, except for the morning show which I thought was awful. The music they played was a really good mix and I didn't keep hearing the same stuff over and over again. The only bad thing, no women were played at all. On that station, I heard exactly one female artist and that was at 5am the morning I was leaving. They played Luscious Jackson.

So that is why I do Rubyfruit Radio. There are too many awesome female artists who get no attention and who deserve to be heard. It's fine that the pop stations play women, but it's the same women...Pink, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey etc and while I do like some of that music, after a while, it gets a little old. The urban stations are the same way. They just keep playing the same handful of female artists.

I've also decided that "popular" music is not popular because it's good, it's popular because people are listening to what they are told is good and not forming their own opinions. Otherwise, some of the crap I heard on the radio would not be on the radio. The corporate giants are feeding it to us and it sucks.

Spin magazine and other stuff

Rubyfruit Radio is featured in the April issue of Spin magazine as part of their "Essentials Mix". It's pretty exciting and hopefully will lead to many more listeners which equals more exposure for the artists that I play.

I was also asked to be on a podcasting panel at the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association convention in Miami in September. September is going to be kind of busy since it's also when the Portable Media and Podcast Expo is. That's in California. Should be a good time on both parts and a great way to network. Now to find a job in Chicago to pay for all this stuff. :)

How could I forget?

In my last post I left out 2 artists that have been in constant play...

Brandi Carlile has been in heavy rotation and Three5Human has been in constant rotation since I heard the lead singer Trina Meade and the guitarist Tomi Martin play with the Indigo Girls at Pride. My soundtrack includes Morrissey, Ani DiFranco, Melissa Ferrick and the Indigo Girls. Their music got me through some very difficult times and also made the good times that much better. There are other random artists who are on the soundtrack of my life, but these are four that have been on it consistently.

What have I been listening to a lot lately? It's pretty varied.

Adrienne Pierce- I heard her song "Arizona" and the combination of the lyrics and her voice and the music made me feel like I was right there experiencing what she was. I listened to the rest of the CD and it's all incredible.

Nadine Zahr- I heard her song "A Little Better" on myspace and it gave me chills. I thought the lyrics were pretty amazing and her voice was too. She sent me an advance copy of her new cd that is coming out in a week and it's been played a lot.

The Gossip- I like all genres of music. I can go from listening to folk to rock to punk. I think Beth Ditto is a great vocalist and if you see them live, you will know that she's a great performer overall. I don't have enough good things to say about The Gossip.

Gerty!- I am a sucker for new wave. I grew up listening to it and Gerty! is modern new wave with an edge. I listen to them all the time.

Rilo Kiley- I love Jenny Lewis. That's all I have to say about that. :)

Check out Rubyfruit Radio

Amy Ray interview

I'm interviewing Amy Ray Monday. I'm pretty excited about it. Nervous, but excited. I've been a fan of hers for almost 20 years so it's a big deal. It's a big deal for Rubyfruit Radio because it will bring more listeners and it will aid my plan for world domination.

I'm putting together the outline for the Daemon Records show and I think I'm going to do a two parter...part one will be the retrospective of Daemon and part 2 will be more about Amy. I don't want to have some crazy, big download for people and it's easier to break it into 2 chunks.

Then after that Spin comes out. Yay!

Check out Rubyfruit Radio

Why women's music?

Someone asked me why I chose to do a podcast with just women. There are a lot of reasons for that.
I have always loved women's music. Something about a girl with a guitar is just plain good. That isn't saying that boys with guitars aren't good too because there are plenty of male voices in my music collection. I just tend to be drawn more to women's voices. I have a friend who prefers male voices. No biggie, just a personal preference.

When I started looking around at what kind of music podcasts were out there, there wasn't anyone out there doing what I was doing. Well, I take that back. 4 days before I did my first podcast, someone else started one too but I didn't find out about it until a lot later. Besides that, she does internet radio and podcasting is secondary. I am the only person with a podcast like this that isn't also doing internet radio. The majority of voices in podcasting are male. There is a proliferation of male voices singing songs on these podcasts with male voices touting them. Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing because I have listened to a lot of kick ass podcasts that with male voices. I wanted to stand out. I'm a woman in a forum that is dominated by men. I did not want to fall into their mold.

Besides, I wanted to resurrect Rubyfruit Radio and really, it's kind of fun to say rubyfruit radio over and over again. :)

Grey's Anatomy music

I really love Grey's Anatomy. I think it is an awesome show. One thing that I think really makes it cool is the soundtrack. They play some really great music. Last week, two artists that stood out were The Weepies and Kate Havnevik. They've also played things like Rosie Thomas, Adrienne Pierce, Esthero, Brandi Carlile and a lot of other stuff too. The music always sets the tone for the show. Whoever picks the music for the show does an amazing job.

Lesbian podcasters

I've searched high and low for lesbian podcasters. It's going to be a spotlight show for Daemon Records which she founded.

The second is that Spin magazine has said they are going to put me in the April issue as part of their Essentials Mix. That's a huge deal because to be included as one of the 12 things they think you should listen to is quite an honor. Past essentials have included bands like Radiohead and NIN. To be included with the likes of artists like that is a big deal. Huge.

Stay tuned for bigger and better things.

Check out Rubyfruit Radio

Some music just plain sucks

I've been getting some interesting submissions lately.
A lot of it has been really good and will definitely get played. Some is just alright and might get played if I feel some sort of obligation...but some of the music I'm getting is just terrible.

Sometimes, the production quality is really crappy. In some instances, I will play songs that don't have the best production quality if it fits the genre (like punk or riot grrrl). I have had a lot of submissions where the artists say that it's just them in their room with their guitar and garageband to record and it it sounds good. I'm not sure what these other people are doing.

Sometimes, the song, the singer or the playing suck. Crappy voice, crappy lyrics and crappy guitar playing will not get you played. I have a hard time saying no to someone. I want to be like Simon Cowell and tell them "That was abysmal and wretched", but instead I make up excuses. I hate that part of doing this show. Rejecting someone is not any fun.

Check out Rubyfruit Radio

Brandi Carlile

I went and saw Brandi Carlile 2/3 at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. The guy who opened for her was terrible. His voice was fine, but every song sounded the exact same, even the songs that had a faster tempo. I was so glad when he was done. Brandi came out and played everything from her CD plus some new songs and her rendition of Hallelujah. Her voice is amazing. She can go from singing like an angel to belting a song out. Amazing. Simple as that. Emily Saliers from the Indigo Girls was there. Brandi dedicated a song to her and told her that Emily is why she picked up a guitar and started playing. It must be a pretty surreal experience to play in front of your inspiration for playing.

Check out Rubyfruit Radio
